Letters recounting our experiences

Welcome to the Unofficial A.I.S.K. home page!

The purpose of this page is to provide a home for Scorpions on the Internet. With this page, I hope that Scorpions can re-establish old friendships, establish new ones, and help us stay in touch with each other.

American International School of Kabul was located in Kabul, Afghanistan. The pictures on this page and the following excerpts are from the '66 Scorpion (yearbook):

American International School of Kabul was built by the US Government through the Agency for International Development at a cost of $380,000.

The property, located on Darulaman Avenue about four miles out of Kabul, was made available by the Royal Afghan Government which also contributed six hundred thousand Afghanis for landscaping. By agreement between the two governments, the buildings will be transfered to the Afghan Government after 20 years. It is probable that this period could be extended.

Construction began in the spring of 1964... Not until February, 1965 were the buildings complete. The high school remained in its old quarters in Shauri-nau and the elementary school continued to occupy what is now the AID staff

house. They were separate and distinct institutions. It was at the end of the first semester, 1964-65 school year, in mid-winter when the elementary and high schools were transfered to their unified new quarters under the collective aegis of AISK.

When the name American International School of Kabul was proposed, it was argued that one institution could not be American and international at the same time. It was countered that these two terms did, indeed, describe exactly what the founders had in mind. Although AISK is American in financial backing, control, and basic curiculum, it was very much the purpose of the founders to incorporate the international aspect of education. This concept was thought advisable in order to provide what was considered to be a better educational opportunity for members of the international community in Afghanistan. The two ideas coincide.
