Kent writes:

"Our family has been reading with interest on the AISK Web site about Afghanistan. It has brought back many good memories of our days there from 1965-72 with Robert R. Nathan Associates in the Ministry of Planning, and living in Karte Seh.

Of special interest was our visit to Bamiyan in 1966 where we stayed overnight in the Guest House there and they told us proudly when we checked in that King Zahir Shah has slept in the same room in the same sheets just the night before. That's probably the closest we've ever come to royalty."

These photos are from that trip. Thanks Kent!

BENEATH THE BORQA

Today's edition (September 1, 2001) of the San Francisco Chronicle, Datebook section, includes an article titled "Portrait of Afghan's Despair."

For those living in the San Francisco Bay Area, this benefit at the Presidio will be on Thursday at 8 PM. For the rest of you, here's a related site for more information about the film on Afghan refugees which headlines the benefit.

The first photo is of Pat in 1997. Pat is with daughter Sasha and husband Don in the second photo. The third photo is a 1959-60 class portrait of Pat taken in Germany just before leaving for Kabul.

The fourth photo is circa 1961-62 of "Helen, Michelle Dunbar and Cindy Bertram, all looking suspiciously like they are eating something resembling sticky fudge or chocolate cake. This is in the old school I went to, as I described, with a deeply shaded playground -- trees and trellises with vines."

The fifth photo is of "Karim, approximate age 14 and Azeem, head servant, age about 19 or 20. They don't have accurate birth records. They were with us the whole two years of our tour, and I have wondered what became of them. Azeem was betrothed to a cousin, age 9, whom his father, a mullah, had arranged for him. Azeem wasn't too enthused about the selection. The girl lived in his home village, far away."

The final photo is of Pat, her dog Heidi, and her mother, Francoise Wolff taken in 1961-62.

Thanks Pat!
