MARIA EOFF RETURNS TO AFGHANISTAN
Major Maria Eoff (1973-79), formerly
Ditta Reyes
(this is a link to her 6th Grade class photo from the
1979 Scorpion)
recently sent me an email with photos from Afghanistan.
Maria is with the US Army and she is stationed in Bagram,
returning home to Afghanistan where she was born.
She is the daughter of Dr. Paquita and Emanuel (Manny) Reyes.
She writes:
"Have had the great opportunity to go to Kabul twice! During my visits, I was able to visit the Christian Cemetery in Shari-naw. My older sister was buried there and the place still looks very intact! The place is guarded 24 hours a day by an old man and his two young sons. I am enclosing a picture of us!"

TELEPHONE DIRECTORY AND HOUSING MAPS
During the 2002 AISK San Antonio Scorpion Stampede,
Mary (Meadows) Pyburn (1968-74)
distributed copies of the August 1973
Telephone Directory and Housing Maps
for the US Mission to Afghanistan.
This is the complete directory which has been added to our
library.
Another Housing Maps (circa 1969 or 1970) was previously published here in
May 2002.
Thanks Mary for sharing this directory with us.
Mary is also our October 31, 2001 Wall Street Journal
front page girl.
This article about us titled "Afghan Idyll: Kabul as a Kid's Paradise, Serene and
Mysterious", starts on the front page with Mary's photo and is continued on
page A10.
Here's the original of the photo
published in the WSJ. This original photo was published in this site on
August 2001.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA SCORPION EVENTS
Scorpions, including members of Advocates for Afghanistan - Alumni of AISK (AFA) and
the Society of Afghan Professionals (SAP),
sponsored a Scorpion Event on February 2, 2003 in Fremont, California.
In typical Scorpion style, the entire weekend became a mini-reunion
with Scorpions and friends converging from New York, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Dallas,
Fresno, Sacramento, San Diego, Tucson, and Honolulu.
The first event was dinner on Friday evening at the Helmand,
an Afghan restaurant in the North Beach district of San Francisco.
The company was great and the food was good.
The "out of towners" were given a tour of favorite San Francisco tourist haunts on Saturday
by Doug Martin. Doug is familiar with San Francisco, having spent his school daze here.
Later that day (and early the next day from all accounts), Scorpions and friends
partied at Jim Springer's place in Oakland across the Bay.
The main event was the Scorpion Event held on Sunday
in Fremont - "Little Kabul." The purpose of the event was for Scorpions to share
their Afghan experiences with the local Afghan community. According to one account,
"one Afghan woman who attended was 'transformed' by the gathering."

ADVOCATES FOR AFGHANISTAN
The Advocates for Afghanistan are delighted to
list the following alumni who have donated so far to the PARSA Girls Schooling Program:
Eric Claussen;
Marnie Gustavson;
Yvonne Gurney;
The Curran Family (Sarah Curran, Diana Curran Galejs, Ted and Marcia Curran);
Christine Gordon;
Norm Trott;
The Michalec Family (George and Norma Michalec, Anne Michalec Payson, Jim Michalec, and Sarah Michalec Halbach).
We continue to ask for donations to this important effort that is purely funded by AISK alumni and is implemented through PARSA -- every bit helps these girls who missed five years of schooling under the Taliban. Just $200 per month pays for two teachers and supplies for 50 girls.
All it takes are eight individual donations of $25 per month to cover the teachers and supplies for the girls.
Ask your family to chip in together to cover the $200 and adopt a school month.
We will provide updates about the school program as Mary MacMakin of PARSA sends information.
Please contact Anne Michalec Payson for more information.

AFGHANS FOR AFGHANS
Ann Rubin of the
afghans for Afghans
organization wrote me the following:
Our knitting and crochet project has been a tangible way for Americans and
Canadians to take some action with their own hands and to express their
concern for the people of Afghanistan. You would be pleased with the
beautiful handmade gifts and accompanying notes that we receive. People care
a lot.
For your own info, I am attaching a
photo
that you might enjoy. We just got
some photos of our December delivery of handmade wool hats, sweaters, socks,
and mittens, to children at a rehabilitation center in Kabul (photos to be
added to our site as soon as we can).
We also want to pursue some microenterprise with Afghan women so they can
earn income to rebuild their lives. Unfortunately, we have not found a
suitable product that would be marketable. I am afraid that the resources are
just too damaged right now. In particular, we are looking for soft wool -- in
case you have any ideas about sourcing, I can tell you a little more about
the venture.
If you would like to help, Ann can be contacted at
afghans4Afghans@aol.com.
