OCTOBER 2003
In this IssueCelebrating 8 years on the 'Net for aisk.org This month, aisk.org celebrates its 8th Anniversary on the Internet! I am extremely proud that our small home on the Internet has outlived numerous other Web sites started around the same time and that aisk.org has been on the 'Net longer than many other of today's better known Web sites. A big THANK YOU goes to everyone who has supported this site with contributions in one form or another.

Last year this month, we gathered in San Antonio for the AISK Scorpion Stampede where a great time was had by all who attended. It's hard to believe that it has already been a year since that reunion.

Two years ago this month, we were all still trying to cope with the events of 9/11 collectively and individually. Maggi (Bennett) and Steve Stoner were featured in stories in The Baldwin Bulletin and The Union-Recorder. Sonoma County Scorpions and aisk.org were featured in the Press Democrat, Empire News (and the rest of article). And to top it all, Mary (Meadows) Pyburn and other Scorpions made the cover of the Wall Street Journal (and the rest of article)!

Just a brief five years ago, this Web site and the Internet were a lot different (check out the July 1997 version of our home page). Our world was very different! Luckily, we still have our own small corner of the Internet to come home to when that feeling to reconnect with our past strikes us. - Gerry

John Steiner (1962-66), his wife Noriko, and their son Nick went back to Kabul in July 2-19, 2003 doing volunteer work for Aschiana.

John has been a photographer at the Smithsonian since 1984. He works at the Natural History Museum taking pictures of objects and specimens in the museum's collections for curators and scientists, for research and publication.

It was difficult selecting one of John's beautiful photos to feature here. Fortunately, you don't have to make that decision. You can view them all:

Thanks John!

Scorpions in the San Francisco Bay Area don't require an excuse to get together whenever they can. On September 27, 2003, Danny & Gina Hilario invited the Bay Area Scorpions to their home in Rohnert Park for a party.

Thanks Danny and Gina!

From the Mailbox
email received last month

Mailbox Dwight Martin '71 wrote: "I see a couple of cases where you've got a "new" mugshot accompanying the "old" in Scorpions' directory listings. If you've room to add a new, here's a current one of me."

"I saw that Jerry Tippets logged on to the forum three days ago. I've searched for him a couple of times over the past 30 years, but to no avail. Lo and behold, because of info on the site (although not an email or phone), I was able to track him down. We've swapped email letters and have had great fun saying "howdy" to each other again after all this time."

"Woo-hoo......the power of networking~! Hahahaha."

"Hope you're well. The site continues to be incredible, man! Truly!"

"I wanted to somehow post this photo to the group at large as it is the memorial for Ambassador Dubs. It was originally in the southwest corner of the Embassy compound but has now been moved to a central spot, the Flag pole. I am not sure how you want to handle this, but I think it is something that everyone would appreciate. Thanks."

"I have been enjoying reading through the threads in the forum and the other various posting as the time I spent in Kabul was much different than most of the group."

Thanks to everyone who wrote.
