Dave Sperry's Photos
Afghanistan in the Early 1970's

Dave Sperry '72 shares his photos from the years he spent in Afghanistan with the Zellers. Dave did not believe that these photos would be of interest to anyone else. I'm glad that I was able to convince him otherwise.

There are a total of 64 photos grouped in 4 pages in this initial installment. Click on each thumbnail below to view each page of photos.

In addition to these photos, Dave left me 2 carousels of slides which I have not started to scan yet.

Thanks Dave!

Mystery Old Hand & Scorpions
Did you recognize them all? Some?

Last month's photos of the mystery Old Hand & Scorpions were from Dave Sperry's photos (see above).

Chops took pity on us when nobody stepped forward to take even a guess. He identified his dad, Dr. Alan Zeller as the mystery Old Hand. He also identified himself as the diver performing a handstand dive off the diving board in an unidentified pool located "outside Kabul, on the road to Jalalabad." The second diver is still a mystery.

I don't think that anyone had a problem identifying Kay Mansury (may her soul rest in peace) or Dennis Tangeman, English teacher.

Everyone was also confident about identifying Cindy Cruit but no one was sure who the girl behind her is. Chops was either playing coy or he has an egg on his face. That girl behind Cindy is his sister, Sarah Zeller (according to the caption in back of the photo).

If you can identify the remaining individuals in these photos (or the locations), post them in the forum.

Pot-luck Party hosted by Jim Springer & Dawn Erickson

Jim Springer '72 and Dawn Erickson (1966-71) recently hosted a "pot-luck" party at their home in Oakland, California.

They shared pictures from their trips to Afghanistan and showed a 20-minute promo of the Advocates for Afghanistan (AFA) documentary "Back to Afghanistan." This documentary is about Americans and Afghan-Americans returning to Afghanistan for the first time in 30 years. It is still a work in progress that AFA is fund-raising for. The project has a non-profit status through Film/Video Arts in New York City.

Scorpions and friends attended the event.

Thanks to Danny Hilario (1960-69) for the photos from this event.

After Kabul...an Update
Click to read entire letterFrom Marnie Gustavson, Advocates for Afghanistan

Dear Friends,

I have finally recovered from being out of the States for 6 weeks and I no longer have "scarf" hair or a tan from the neck up. I apologize to all of you who have been calling me to see if I am all right. We have an unprecedented level of interest in our projects in Afghanistan and I have had difficulty organizing and prioritizing this wonderful volunteer effort.

So I am sending you an e-mail now and hoping to get my web journal fixed so I can finish my story and keep you posted on the projects you are supporting.

I was in Afghanistan long enough this time for the novelty to where off, to have difficult adventures, to get mad, frustrated and upset and to have the whole experience get under my skin so that I am actually homesick now. I am attaching a few choice pictures of myself on my trip. I was asking Ajmal, the young Afghan who accompanied me to work on some of my volunteer projects, to write about his trip for the webjournal. During our trip his family was robbed and beaten by thugs, and the experience was overwhelmingly difficult for him. He wrote me back to say that he didn't have much nice to say about Afghanistan. I asked him to consider contributing to our journal with his reflections bad and good and assured him that we were more interested in learning than in any romance about it. He is going to work with me on this.

Dave Sperry '72 submitted this framed wedding invitation gag from 1971: Brown-Greenberg Vows to be Spoken in Afghanistan

Fast forward to the year 2000 and the Scorpion Millenium Reunion held in Berkeley, California. Who would have imagined that most members of the Blue Sharks would re-group with other Scorpion musicians? What a trip back down memory lane. Here's a video of the Blue Sharks and Scorpion musicians performing "We've Got to Get Out of this Place" (6.59MB). The next video available here will be dancers from the same reunion! Who will they be?
