AISK
American International School of Kabul

AISK School Buildings American International School of Kabul was located in Kabul, Afghanistan. The school sign on the left, the photo on the right, and the following excerpts are from the '66 Scorpion (yearbook):

American International School of Kabul was built by the US Government through the Agency for International Development at a cost of $380,000.

The property, located on Darulaman Avenue about four miles out of Kabul, was made available by the Royal Afghan Government which also contributed six hundred thousand Afghanis for landscaping. By agreement between the two governments, the buildings will be transfered to the Afghan Government after 20 years. It is probable that this period could be extended.

Construction began in the spring of 1964... Not until February, 1965 were the buildings complete. The high school remained in its old quarters in Shauri-nau and the elementary school continued to occupy what is now the AID staff house. They were separate and distinct institutions. It was at the end of the first semester, 1964-65 school year, in mid-winter when the elementary and high schools were transfered to their unified new quarters under the collective aegis of AISK.

When the name American International School of Kabul was proposed, it was argued that one institution could not be American and international at the same time. It was countered that these two terms did, indeed, describe exactly what the founders had in mind. Although AISK is American in financial backing, control, and basic curiculum, it was very much the purpose of the founders to incorporate the international aspect of education. This concept was thought advisable in order to provide what was considered to be a better educational opportunity for members of the international community in Afghanistan. The two ideas coincide.

KIHS
Kabul International High School

The following photos and excerpts are from the '61 Scorpion (yearbook):

The Kabul International High School was founded in September, 1959. Kabul residents from several national groups formed the High School Association on which membership was open to all adults interested in improving educational opportunities for foreign children living in the Kabul area.

Sixteen students registered, and school opened for instruction on Monday, September 21, 1959. Those in the first graduating class of June, 1960 were Carol Okerlund, Jim Moncur, and John Sanger.

The school year for 1960-1961 started on September 6, 1960, with thirty students. Much progress has been made this year: typing was added to the curriculum, thanks to the donation of seven typewriters from TASK; guidance and consultation assistance has been added through the voluntary service of Mr. Thomas E. Ford, of the Teachers College, Columbia University Team, who has instituted a Guidance and Testing program in cooperation with the Educational Records Bureau; new textbooks have been acquired for almost all courses offeredl and our lbrary has been increased by many volumes, mostly donations from friends in the foreign community here.

Our school is now a member of the College Entrance Examination Board and is offering the qualifying entrance examinations this May to all interested Juniors and Seniors. We will continue to present these examinations at regular intervals.

To achieve the purpose for which this school was founded, we have affiliated ourselves with the International Schools Foundation, an international organization which assists and coordinates the efforts of "International" schools to provide the best possible educational program for both elementary and secondary students in overseas posts.
