Our history
Thirty years after AISK is formed (1995), the Internet is on the verge of exploding
into the mainstream and finds Gerry Geronimo searching for his past.
Gerry searches the Internet for any information relating to "AISK" and
the search yields contact with
Ken Loss-Cutler '66.
Ken and Gerry appear to have been the only Scorpions surfing the Web for AISK and other Scorpions then.
The Worldwide Web (WWW) and its potential to link
individuals to people in their past intrigued Gerry.
With Ken's encouragement and help, Gerry published the "AISK" Web site
in October 1995. Its purpose was to serve as a home
for AISK Scorpions to find when they discovered the Internet.
The original AISK Web site looked like the "July 1997" version
shown on the left (click on the thumbnail to view).
Since its humble beginnings, this Web site has grown to truly becoming
the home of the AISK Scorpions on the Internet. It acquired its own
domain name (aisk.org) in February 2000 thanks to the sponsorship of
C. David Dempsey (1967-68).
All are welcome to this site
Postings of questions, or thoughtful views on topics, are encouraged because the posting and answers invariably educate - and AISK and Afghanistan were all about education, both in and out of the classroom.
Anyone may read the entries and view what we have posted. Anyone may make a post -although Scorpions do not take kindly to blatant commercial endorsements or statements that are bigoted or hurtful to others.
Former students at AISK and Old Hands (people associated with the international community in Kabul in any of a myriad of capacities) may register for access to posted email addresses. Our email address listing is secure and is only for Scorpions and Old Hands use.
Welcome home, Scorpions!
If this is your first visit to this site, Welcome home!
You probably feel excited and overwhelmed to be reunited with your
past and your Scorpion family. You don't know where to start.
Take a deep breath and spend a little time here to orient yourself.
Step 1: Register Yourself in the Directory
Scorpions and Old Hands who have already come home are listed in the
Directory. To contact your friends listed
in the Directory, you must first register.
You will be provided with a username and password to access the email
addresses in the Directory after successfully registering.
Step 2: Catch Up
You're probably anxious to start emailing your friends to catch up.
You may want to consider exploring the wealth of information available
on the pages of this site before you start emailing.
The What's New section is updated monthly
and it contains the latest information about our community: the people,
events, and updates to this site. Recent photos and news about Scorpions
and Old Hands are available in this section.
Past monthly issues of this site (since January 2000) are available in the
Past Issues section of the Library.
The Newsletters section of the library
contains past issues of the K.I.H.S./A.I.S.K. Newsletter dating back
to April 1986 - the first issue.
These 2 sections of the Library include
personal updates and photos from past reunions of Scorpions and Old Hands.
Step 3: Join In
The most popular section of this site is the
Guest Book.
It has become the local "watering hole" for the community where
Scorpions and others discuss (some say bicker about) current events and
other topics - almost anything goes, except foul language.
(Caution: do not use your email
address in the Guest Book because unscrupulous people will send you scams
and spams.)
Guest Books & Letters are archived in the
library.
The entries are entertaining if you don't take them too seriously.
Some Scorpions also gather every Sunday at around 9PM EST in the
Bazaar to chit chat.
Step 4: Explore our home
Once you feel at home, explore our Web site.
The Photos section contains lots of photos
of Scorpions, Kabul, and Afghanistan - both past and present.
You can spend a lot of time in this section of the library.
Lost your yearbook?
The Yearbooks section of the library
includes all yearbooks - cover to cover and all
pages in between!
Additional interesting material are stored in the
Audio, Videos and
Miscellaneous sections of the Library.
Step 5: Expand your Horizon
The Internet holds a wealth of information, both useful and useless.
The Links section of this site will lead you
to other Internet sites of interest to Scorpions and Old Hands.
The Book Reviews section of the Library
has a list of recommended books.
The aisk.org Web site is what it is today because of your contributions
and support.
Please continue to submit your photos, memorabilia, stories and other
material related to our unique past and experiences as Scorpions.
Your participation will ensure that aisk.org remains the definitive resource of
AISK information on the Internet.
Gerry thanks our site sponsors and
Maggi (Bennett) Stoner for serving as our site editor.
Collectively, the Scorpions wish to thank everyone who has contributed and supported this site.
