Back to topAli Masjid - The Narrowest Section of the Khyber Pass
Posted: Sat Nov 13, 2004 10:47 am

Click to enlargeRichard 'Jake' Jacobson '68 submitted the following photo of a plaque from the Khyber Pass. He writes:

"The attached photo may be of interest. It came from an elderly Swiss lady who told me about traveling in the region, crossing into China from Pakistan, trekking through the mountains etc. Of course, I thought about the adventurous Europeans who bicycled through Kabul in the old days and assumed she was one of those. Actually, she was just there in 1997 when she must have been in her 70s!"

The plaque states: "You are presently passing through the narrowest portion of the historic Khyber Pass known as Ali Masjid. It was here that the famous battle of Ali Masjid was fought between the British and the Afghans in the second Afghan War 1878. The pass itself is 42 KMs. long starting from Bab.I.Khyber (Gate) at Jamrud and going right up to Torkham on the Pak..Afghan border. The famous Khyber Pass is known as the Western Gateway to the South Asian Sub Continent..."

Thanks Jake! (Here's a relatively recent photo of Jake with the rest of his class attending the 2000 Berkeley reunion.)

Back to topScorpion Profile: Tod Sloan (1965-67)
Posted: Sun Nov 14, 2004 8:57 pm

Click to view Tod sloan's photo on page 33 of the 1968 Scorpion yearbookOn August 24, 2004, Lewis & Clark College (Portland, Oregon) announced Tod Sloan Named Counseling Psychology Chair.

The photo of Tod Sloan (1965-67) on the left is from the 1968 Scorpion yearbook.

Tod just posted a new thread in the Forum: Support for social and emotional aspects of student learning where he wrote:

"Thanks to a new position in a counselor training program, I have become involved in a project that would support the training of counselors and other paraprofessionals to support children and youth in school in Afghanistan. The idea is to train teachers to attend to the emotional aspects of life that can interfere with learning."

"Obviously, this is a need in all schools everywhere, but it is something we can help with in Afghanistan in particular. I need to make sure we are not being redundant as we develop this project, so if anyone is aware of anything else that has been developed along these lines, please let me know. If we can link with other projects we can be more effective."

If you can assist Tod, please respond in the Forum or by email, Private Message or AOL Instant Messaging.

Click to enlargeSusie (Messall) Kessler 1962-64 submitted the photo of the first Kabul International High School cheerleading squad. Susie writes:

"Look what I found when cleaning out my garage in a box of old photographs!! The first cheerleading squad of Kabul International High School! From left to right they are: Lori Hubbel - sophomore, Kay Brock - junior, Mary Ellen King - senior, Joann Robinson - junior, Marcia Hubbel - freshman and yours truly, Captain Susie Messall - junior,!!! This was taken in the old high school yard and the year is 1964! Our big game was a tournament played against the American Air Force High School in Peshawar - just about the entire school made the road trip in two buses - We lost all the games but played before a packed gym - we had a great time anyway! 'Those were the days'!"

Thanks Susie!

Back to topWelcome to Fernando Serpa (1968-69 Ahlman Academy)
Posted: Mon Nov 29, 2004 10:36 pm

Welcome to Fernando Serpa (1968-69 Ahlman Academy)! Fernando writes:

"I lived in Kabul in 1968-69 and went to Ahlman Academy. I did all sports with the AISK crowd. Most of the names I remember from that time are from Ahlman Academy: John Frieberg (?), from New Zealand; Stuart Baldwin, whose dad was American and mom Indian; Eric Claussen, whose name I've seen on this site. Also several people by their first names: Janet, a girl from Cyprus; Wellesley, the principal's son; Julia, whose dad worked for the king... From AISK I remember my coach Mr. Mullen, who introduced me to football, and his son David. It would be wonderful to get in touch with any of them."

"I have lived in Asia, Latin America, Europe and the US. Married, three sons 17, 14 and 11. Currently working for Kraft Foods, based in Miami, Fl."
