This set of photos of the Hadda excavation site is the latest installment from The Alexander & Fliehr Collection. Hadda is located in eastern Afghanistan, north of Jalalabad. Hadda is rich with Buddhist stucco sculptures, much of which have been either stolen or destroyed today. The following Web sites provide additional information and photos of these treasures: Thanks to Dave Fliehr, Harry and Molly Alexander for these photos.

Mystery Scorpions: AISK Basketball Team
Posted:
Mon Jan 17, 2005 8:46 pm
I can identify all of these AISK basketball team players because they are all from my era, and I think this might be the same Varsity team that almost got beat by my Junior Varsity team at the Kabul University gym. (OK, it was the second string Varsity team and I had a great game where I couldn't miss from the corner.) Look at those tight shorts!
But, can you identify them? Enter your guess or guesses in the Forum. Extra credit if you can identify the Scorpion whose face is hidden by "Number 2."
Here's a hint: the handsome guy on the end of the right-hand side is no other than Chris "Tex" Brown who submitted this photo. Thanks Chris!

Preview: The Chris "Tex" Brown Collection
Posted:
Sun Jan 23, 2005 9:20 am
Here are the first couple of many photos promised by Chris "Tex" Brown from his collection. (Note: There were 2 Chris Browns who attended AISK, hence the use of "Tex" and "Bunder" to differentiate between the two. "Tex" or "Sanak" is the one from the 60's and "Bunder" is from the 70's.)
If you remember, Van "Peepers" Auburn and Chris "Tex" Brown (both 1962-66) set off on their excellent adventure at the end of July 2003 - a Return to Kabul. These photos are from that trip.
Thanks Chris and we're all looking forward to the rest of your collection!

1971 Buzkashi - Celebrating the King's 57th Birthday
Posted:
Sun Jan 30, 2005 1:10 pm
Here are the photos from the 1971 Buzkashi Contest celebrating the 57th Birthday of His Majesty the King of Afghanistan. This is the latest installment of photos from the Alexander & Fliehr Collection of Afghan photos.
Buzkashi is the national game of Afghanistan whereby 2 teams of 5 - 10 riders compete by carrying a headless calf past a line of flags (worth 1 point) and dropping it into a scoring circle (2 points) while the other team attempts to do the same. The game requires great skills in horsemanship. More information about the game of Buzkashi is available in the 1971 Program of this event which was originally published here in May 2002.
Thanks to Dave Fliehr, Harry and Molly Alexander for the photos and the program for the event!
