Back to topMarch 2005 Statistics for aisk.org
Posted: Sat Apr 02, 2005 10:27 am

Click to view details of the March 2005 Statistics for aisk.orgThese figures are approximations because it is difficult to take exact measurements of Internet traffic. The following is a summary of the March 2005 statistics for our site.

We had a total of 2,600 unique visitors last month. 75 of the new visitors added aisk.org to their "Favorites" folder (90.9% of our visits already originate directly from a "Favorites" bookmark). These visitors visited our site an average of 2.07 times, viewing an average of 9.67 pages per visit and each visit averaging 589 seconds (almost 10 minutes per visit). The total amount of data served up by our server to these visitors was 2.56 GB (Gigabytes).

On a daily basis, we had an average of 174 visits and 1,681 pages viewed. We have visitors every hour of the day, but the least active period is between 1-3 AM PST. The most active periods in the day are from 9-10 AM PST and then again from 5-6 PM PST. Can anyone guess who our most active user was last month?

I was wondering if you could please add the Saunders family to the list of Old Hands/Scorpions who may be interested in attending the Oct. 2005 Reunion in Washington, DC. Dick & Gerry Saunders (Old Hands), Kent Saunders, Jane Saunders McCarthy, and Ross Saunders. Thank you very much."

That's a 1966 photo of the Saunders family at the foot of the Buddha in Bamian Valley, one of several photos from Kent which were originally published here in September 2001.

There's also an email making the rounds to all of the Scorpion musicians who performed at the Berkeley and San Antonio reunions to assemble them all for an encore at the 2005 Scorpion/Old Hands Reunion to be held in Washington, D.C. from October 21-23, 2005.

"Today was the first day that I got a chance to go and see the school. I only had a video camera and I will try to send it but if I can't, I will send it to you when I get back."

"It was a very stange feeling to walk the school in it's present shape. There is no roof on any of the buildings but I could still hear the hustle and bustle of the students as I walked the hallways."

"Say Hi everyone."

If anyone is traveling to Kabul and would like Obaid Jon's phone number, let me know. This photo of Darulaman Palace was taken by Obaid Jon on a previous trip to Kabul (April 1998) when the Taliban was still in power. This photo was one of many photos published here back in January 2000. Thanks for the update, Obaid Jon!

Chris wrote: "... near the Office of Mines Removal in Sheri-Nau I noticed a few planes kept in their compound....interesting MIG and bomber...also anyone remember the 1960's Embassy US? Hasn't changed much but unused."

Chris, I remember it well, specially the USIS section and theater. I watched a lot of movies there as did the rest of you. I also remember my sister and I competing in a talent show there dancing the "Mash Potatoes." We won something because I remember receiving some award from Ambassador Steeves. I have a photo of this somewhere which I'll try to find.

Here are the other photos: view of Kabul and entrance to "old" American Embassy. Thanks Chris!

Danny says you might be driving from DC to Nashville for the reunions. If you do, stop by here in Lynchburg, it's right on the way. Maybe we can all carpool or caravan together."

This is a reminder for everyone that you only have through the end of this month (April) to make your hotel reservations for the Gathering in Nashville and get the group discount rate. Holiday Inn reservation number for Nashville is 1-800-633-4427 and don't forget to give the ID Code AAR for your room rate of $79.00 plus tax.

So I was waiting to email you like one had to do originally to get a new password. But now I see, that's possible to do on the Home Page. So I got myself a new password and I'm in again. I can't tell you how many people must be so grateful to have this AISK site. I know I am. I'm planning on attending the reunion in Washington, DC. Hope to see you there. And I hope all is well with you and yours. All the best as always."

Thanks to Mike and Jana for writing in. Thanks to Beth Prout and Gina Hilario for their continued support and sponsorship of our site.

There are several Scorpions featured in these photos including the one on the right. Let's see if anyone can identify any or all of them. Also note the "rock pile" in the same photo. I wonder if our mountain climbers found this rock pile or stacked the rocks themselves.

Thanks to Dave Fliehr, Harry & Molly Alexander for sharing these photos with us.

My balcony was there and I remember fondly sneaking in and out of the house from there to the wall. The trees in the front yard were only three inches thick and about as high as the wall when we were living there. Now look at them. Thank Allah they didn't go for tea dukhans to be burned for local drinking pleasures."

Back to topThe "New" Old Hands From Afghanistan
Posted: Sat Apr 30, 2005 2:45 pm

Click to enlarge photo by Brent AyersI have just completed reading online articles about 36 members of an Indiana National Guard unit returning from Afghanistan and more than 300 soldiers of the U.S. Army Reserve's 367th Engineer Battalion also returning home from Afghanistan after completing their yearlong mission in Afghanistan. I am very grateful to these brave soldiers for defending our country and helping Afghanistan get back on its feet after over 20 years of strife.

These soldiers are part of the new "Old Hands" from Afghanistan!

I wonder what they think of their brief visit to Afghanistan and encounters with its people today, and again several years from now. I wonder if they will have the same fond memories of Afghanistan and its people as most of us who briefly lived in Afghanistan during the 60's and 70's?

The photo of two unknown soldiers in Kabul above on the right was taken by Brent Ayers - all three are "new" Old Hands from Afghanistan.
