Walked around Shar-i-Nau (New City) and it looks like Kabul is truely returning to normal. Very few beggars and street children compared to last year and the year before.
Walked the length of Chicken Street and only got the "hard sell" from one shop owner -- nice to be ignored for a change. It appears that Shar-i-Nau is destined to become Kabul's upscale shopping
and commercial district, but it will never replace the bazaars by the Spinzar Hotel and along the Kabul River. The "Bird Bazaar", the "Gold Bazaar", the "Money Changer's Bazaar", etc, etc,
will be around 'til the end of time. ISAF has a minimal presence and a new law dictates that no security guard houses may be on the street outside a residence or place of business.
Makes the city look normal. (Yes, Chris, no more "blue box" outside the Ariana Guest House.) One step at a time, Kabul jan is coming back.
"Qatra, qatra, darya mesha" -- "Drop by drop, a river is made."
