Click to read the obituiary for Gene GlassmanEugene H. Glassman, of Johnson City, NY, left this Earth on February 15, 2009, after a lengthy and courageous battle with congestive heart failure. He was born on October 29, 1924, in Seattle, Washington, the second of his parents’ three children. A graduate of Seattle Pacific College (BA), Dallas Theological Seminary (ThM), Northwestern University (MA, Linguistics), Wheaton College, Illinois, (MA) with additional post graduate studies in Arabic and Greek at Fuller Seminary (Pasadena, CA).

Gene and his wife, Jane, spent 42 years as missionaries in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Thailand, Hong Kong, and finally in Nepal. Much of his time, while overseas, was spent in language work directing language schools, writing numerous language books for Urdu, Dari and Farsi. The culmination of his work was a new common-language Urdu New Testament in manuscript form (which he wrote entirely by hand in Persian script), useful for minority-language Bible translation projects in Pakistan. A vision of medieval monks hand writing Bibles comes to mind. Gene was also the driving force behind the founding of Murree Christian School in 1956, for missionary and other children in Murree, Pakistan.

Click to enlarge photo of Asian Art Museum, San FranciscoFor Scorpions in or near the San Francisco Bay Area, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco is holding an exhibit titled "Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul" until January 25, 2009.

I went to see it a couple of weekends ago and it is well worth a visit. The treasures on display are beautiful and I'm happy that they were saved by brave Afghans who did so at the risk of losing their lives if caught.

There is also another exhibition titled "Afghanistan 1970-1975: Images From An Era of Peace" in the San Francisco Public Library nearby.

Jim and I arrived back in Afghanistan last Saturday morning after another strange ride on Ariana Afghan Airlines from Istanbul, Turkey to Kabul. The flight left at 11:00 p.m. then made a stop not on our ticket in Ankara for one hour. Then at 2:30 a.m. Istanbul time, 4:00 a.m. Kabul time all the lights in the plane were turned on to wake us up. After a short discussion with a flight attendant it became clear that even though the plane was not due to land in Kabul until 7:30 a.m. that it was breakfast time. One of the attendants said, ‘Doesn’t everyone eat breakfast at 4 o’clock?’

We arrived in Kabul bleary-eyed from lack of sleep to be greeted at the airport by a taxi driver who recognized us from past trips. Amazingly even though he had not seen us for six months, he started to recount where we lived in Kabul, where we lived in the US and who some of my friends were at the airport and what they were doing now.

The 2008 U.S. Presidential election represents a major crossroad for America and the rest of the world. Voters have a choice between continuing the policies of George W. Bush and embracing a fresh start with Barack Obama.

Barack Obama has clearly described his polices at his Web site. Obama will create new jobs by investing in renewable energy and repairing our highways and bridges. He has pledged to reinstate the "Pay Go" rules (spending must match revenue) that will help reverse the current "borrow-and-spend" policies.

Barack Obama is a proven and effective leader. His campaign has inspired millions of people to become involved in the political process. Most of his funding comes from individual contributors, not lobbyist and special interest groups. He has built a grass-roots campaign with organizers and volunteers in all 50 states.

Barack Obama will rebuild our military, broken by repeated deployments to Iraq. He will focus on our enemies who attacked us on 9/11. Obama will protect and rebuild Afghanistan, a country that helped bring about an end to the cold war by defeating the Soviets. Obama recognizes that violence and 50-year occupations cannot defeat terrorism.

John McCain agrees with and has voted for 90% of Bush's policies on deficit spending, tax cuts for the wealthy, lack of affordable health care, federalization of education and reducing women's rights. McCain has shown a pandering lack of judgment in selecting an ill-prepared running mate for vice-president. At 72-years, McCain is too old for the rigorous responsibilities of a modern presidency.

If you believe America is on the wrong track, as a member of the AISK community, I encourage you to vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

The following was originally published here on September 11, 2005. This message from the publisher of this site has been updated and re-published. Now more than ever, its message is an important reminder for all of US.

I Pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America..."We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." - The Declaration of Independence

The war had been in progress for some time already. September 11, 2001 was the day this war was brought home to the American people, figuratively and literally. The bombings of our Embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (August 7, 1998), and the attack on the USS Cole (October 12, 2000) should have been our wake up calls that our enemies had declared war against US, our freedoms and our way of life. If we had any doubts about this war before, September 11, 2001 erased them forever.

Seven years ago, we were warned that this war would take time and that it would test our convictions and resolve. It has. And we are not even close to the end of this war. It won't be easy - it hasn't been. This war will require sacrifices from all of us - it already has. But we must not lose our will and determination to prevail in this war. Losing this war is not an option. Remember September 11, 2001, a day of infamy.

It's inaccurate to call this a war against terrorism. It's more than terrorism. Terrorism is simply one of the ways our enemies have decided to engage us. It's a war like all other wars, a war to grab power. Power to deny us our freedoms. Power to slow, stop and even reverse inevitable change and progress. Power to control our actions and thoughts. Power to force Islam on all of us. Power in the hands of a few people who would like to force their beliefs and morals on the rest of humanity.

We must forcefully engage our enemies on all fronts. We must dictate the form and conditions of engagement on them. We must use everything at our disposal to fight our enemies in this war.

We must not be afraid to confront and eliminate our enemies ruthlessly. We must not become our own worst enemies in this war by imposing arbitrary conditions and limits on ourselves. The only way to fight and win a war is to fight an all out war and bring it home to them as they have brought it to us. Do not forget September 11, 2001.

We have already seen some good resulting from fighting this war. Afghanistan. This war brought world attention and more importantly, our attention to this poor country and its people, ignored and left to suffer in their own misery. Who can argue that Afghanistan and the Afghans are better off today? Iraq. The removal of its dictator is a huge relief to the Iraqi people and us. It is difficult to contemplate what evil this madman could have wrought on us, this madman who had no compunctions in gassing his own people to death.

The fight to gain and retain freedom is not easy. We must continue to fight for ours and help the rest of humanity gain theirs. Remember our brave soldiers who have died fighting for our freedom. Support our brave soldiers around the world and at home who continue the fight for our freedom. Remember September 11, 2001.

Experience

John McCain has the experience. His opponent does not. Would any major corporation in the world today hire Barack Obama as its CEO based on his very limited experience?

Leadership

John McCain has proven himself to be a leader specially in times of crisis. Courage is an important part of leadership, and there is no question of John McCain's courage. When has Barack Obama demonstrated his leadership?

Patriotism

Yes. It is very important. There is no question about John McCain's patriotism. He has proven it by putting his life on the line for our country. John McCain puts his country first and not his ambition.

Transparency & Consistency

We know John McCain - the man, what he has done, what he stands for, and what he wants to do. He has been consistent, never wavering from his beliefs. Would you trust the security and future of our great country to Barack Obama, someone we barely know and someone who bends easily to prevailing winds?

Our choice is clear. John McCain is the only qualified candidate worthy of being our next President of these United States.

As the publisher of this Web site, I encourage you to vote in the upcoming national elections and to vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin. The two are our only hope for change.

This month two events in Afghanistan impacted our morale at PARSA. The murders of the four staff members of International Rescue Committee were heartbreaking for the “NGO” community in Afghanistan. These workers traveled through a troubled province in two cars well marked as “IRC” under a dated assumption that charitable organizations are immune from violence in a war zone. This event underscored the hateful nature of this war here in Afghanistan showing that people such as our staff at PARSA who are working hard to assist impoverished Afghans have become a target for violence. As we talked about this event we grappled with the strong message that there are people who do not want us here.

"It was a shock to realise the website has been up so long. I wasn't in Kabul long but it surely shaped my life, so the website was very welcome.

Here comes a recent photo of me, basking in the rare Swedish sun! ... and one of Bamian. I have more photos but I will have to scan them in and so forth...coming soon!

I have lived in Switzerland, UK, Sweden and Italy since leaving Afghanistan. I graduated from university of Sussex and Loughborough in the UK, got a PhD in Sweden, have a wife and 2 kids (girl, 14, and boy, 17). I have helped Leon Flamholc with documentaries as well. Leon was in Afghanistan in 1980 and did an undercover documentary on the Russian presence there. There is lots to say. Like, 'where's home really?'

I noticed, with great pleasure, that someone had remembered my sister (Paola Onori). I will try to get into the forum and thank them personally.
